How to Properly Rehydrate Cigars for a Great Smoke

Rehydrating cigars is a delicate process that can greatly improve their smoking experience. Whether you've accidentally left your cigars too dry or received them in less than optimal condition, proper rehydration can restore their flavor, aroma, and overall quality. In this guide, we'll walk you through the steps to successfully rehydrate cigars without resorting to plagiarism.

  1. Assessing Cigar Dryness: Before beginning the rehydration process, it's important to assess the level of dryness of your cigars. Gently pinch a cigar between your fingers; if it feels brittle or crumbles easily, it's too dry and needs rehydration.

  2. Gather Necessary Supplies: To effectively rehydrate cigars, you'll need the following supplies:

  • Airtight container (such as a Tupperware or Ziploc bag)

  • Distilled water

  • Boveda packs or humidity control solution

  • Hygrometer (optional but recommended for accurate humidity monitoring)

  1. Preparing the Rehydration Environment: Place the airtight container in a cool, dark place. This environment will ensure a gradual and controlled rehydration process.

  2. Adding Humidity: a. Boveda Packs: If you're using Boveda packs, place the appropriate number inside the container. Boveda packs are designed to release or absorb moisture as needed to maintain a consistent humidity level. b. Distilled Water: If you're using distilled water, dampen a clean sponge or paper towel and place it inside a small dish within the container. Do not let the cigars come into direct contact with the water source.

  3. Monitoring Humidity Levels: If you have a hygrometer, place it inside the container to monitor humidity levels. The ideal humidity range for cigars is around 65-70%. Adjust the number of Boveda packs or the dampness of the sponge/paper towel to maintain this range.

  4. Patience Is Key: Rehydration is not an overnight process. Depending on the level of dryness, it might take a few days to a week for the cigars to regain their optimal moisture level. Avoid rushing the process, as sudden humidity changes can damage the cigars.

  5. Test and Enjoy: After the rehydration period, gently pinch the cigars again to check their flexibility. If they feel supple and have regained a bit of elasticity, they are ready to smoke. However, it's still recommended to allow the cigars to rest in a controlled humidity environment for a few more days before enjoying them.
